Seeing OpenAI's o3 playing Pokémon Red live on air made me suddenly realize that the gaming industry is undergoing a quiet revolution. the ability of AI to not only play games, but to think and make decisions like human players, and even play them better than we do, feels both exciting and a little unsettling. Remember when Google DeepMind's AlphaStar beat the pros in Starcraft 2 last year? That was just the beginning, and now AI has evolved to the point where it can understand the game's plot and develop long-term strategies.

When AI becomes the "player" in the game.
The most immediate change is the intelligence of NPCs (non-player characters). NPC behavior in traditional games is preset, and you will find patterns after playing for a long time. But with AI added, NPCs can adjust their strategies in real time based on player behavior. For example, in the "Wild Dart 2", Rockstar tried to let the NPC remember the player's behavioral habits, the next time they meet will have a different reaction. This dynamic interaction makes the game world suddenly "alive".
Even more shocking are AIs like o3, which demonstrate the ability to play games completely autonomously. Through reinforcement learning, the AI is able to master game mechanics without human intervention. In Dota 2, OpenAI Five has been able to beat 99.95% human players. This is not just a technical demonstration, it implies that game testing and balance adjustments may be done by AI in the future.
A revolution in personalized gaming experiences
What I'm looking forward to most about AI is that it can create a "thousand faces" gaming experience. EA's SEED department is experimenting with using AI to adjust the difficulty of the game in real time, not simply adjusting a value, but analyzing the player's operating habits and then dynamically changing the design of the level. For example, if you are always stuck in a boss battle, the AI may quietly adjust the attack mode, or add hints and clues.
There are also some independent studios that are trying something more radical. There is a tool called Promethean AI, the developer as long as the input "medieval tavern, there are five drunken men quarrelling", AI can automatically generate a complete scene. Although the effect is still relatively rough, but this technology may revolutionize the game development process.
Ethical dilemmas for AI players
But it's not all good news that AI brings. MMOs like World of Warcraft have already seen AI trainers, with some players using scripts to automatically complete quests for rewards, destroying the game's economic system. What's even trickier is that some AIs have been able to mimic human actions so well that you can't tell if you're playing against a real person or an AI in a ranked ladder match.
Game makers are now in a dilemma: completely blocking AI may miss out on technological innovation, but letting it go will affect the player experience. Blizzard has tried to use machine learning to detect cheating behavior, the result is that a lot of real players were blocked by mistake. I'm afraid we'll have to figure this out before we can find a balance.
To be honest, as a player I am both looking forward to and apprehensive, AI makes the game smarter and more personalized, but to some extent, it also changes the essence of the meaning of "playing games". When AI can play the game better than us, are we playing the game or watching AI perform? This question, probably every player has a different answer.
