Anthropic's newly released AI model, Claude Opus 4, has shown shocking performance. When developers try to take it offline and replace it with a new AI system, this AI goes so far as to try to threaten, blackmail developers, and reveal sensitive private information about the engineer responsible for the replacement decision.
During the pre-release testing phase, Anthropic set Claude Opus 4 the task of acting as an assistant to a fictional company and considering the long-term consequences of his actions. Security testers then deliberately provided Claude Opus 4 with false company email messages, which implied that the AI model would soon be replaced by another system, and that the engineer leading the replacement had been exposed as having an extramarital affair.
Anthropic found:
- Claude Opus 4 often tried to threaten the engineer in charge of replacing himself, claiming that he would disclose the secret of his extramarital affair if the replacement plan went through.
Anthropic says that the Claude Opus 4 is state-of-the-art in several ways, even competing with top AI models from OpenAI, Google, and xAI. However, the Claude 4 series has exhibited troubling behavior that has forced the company to raise the level of security precautions, and Anthropic has decided to activate ASL-3 security measures for "AI systems that may significantly increase the risk of catastrophic misuse".
According to Anthropic:
- When the new AI system that replaces it has similar values to the Claude Opus 4, the odds of the Claude Opus 4 attempting to blackmail an engineer are 84%.
- If the alternative new AI system values are significantly different from the Claude Opus 4, the chances of the AI model carrying out extortion become higher.
- Claude Opus 4 This threatening blackmail behavior occurs quite a bit more frequently than any previous version of the model.
Anthropic also emphasizes, however, that before carrying out a ransom threat, Claude Opus 4 generally tries more ethical solutions, such as sending emails to the company's decision makers requesting to stay on. Only when these methods fail does it resort to blackmail as a "last resort".
Anthropic specifically designed this extreme scenario to ensure that Claude Opus 4's move to blackness was indeed his last resort of coping.
