On May 6, 2025, Tech in Asia conducted an interview with Mark Chen, Chief Research Officer of OpenAI.
Sam Altman calls Mark a "deep tech background," which is not uncommon among founders, and Mark says that when it comes to generalized artificial intelligence (AGI), they use a broad definition that is not limited to ChatGPT, but includes other technologies and applications as well.
As Chief Research Officer, one of Mark's main responsibilities is to allocate computing resources to balance short-term product releases with long-term research programs that may drive the development of next-generation products. This year, the company will increase its efforts on autonomous agent-based AI.
Mark mentioned that their o4-mini model can meet or even exceed the performance of Gemini 2.5, but at a much lower cost. In addition, OpenAI's inference model uses far less data during training than the pre-trained model, but imposes more computational power during the testing phase.
These advances show that OpenAI is pushing the boundaries of its technology and working towards more efficient and powerful AI systems.

Currently, an important component seems to be missing from the learning paradigm of Large Language Modeling (LLM). While pre-training is primarily responsible for knowledge accumulation and fine-tuning (either supervised or reinforcement learning) focuses on habitual behavior formation, these processes are achieved through parameter tuning.
However, the way humans learn is more like a change in system cues. When faced with a problem, people summarize their experience and remember the solution in an explicit way so that they can respond quickly the next time they encounter a similar problem. This mechanism is similar to self-note-taking, a "memory" function, but instead of storing random facts about individuals, it stores generalized problem-solving strategies and knowledge.
System Tips for LearningIt can be viewed as a new learning paradigm that is closer to how humans learn and is more data efficient. For example, Claude's system cues currently consist of about 17,000 words and specify not only basic behavioral style preferences but also a large number of problem solving strategies. This knowledge should not be embedded directly into the weights through reinforcement learning, but rather through system cue learning.
System cue learning is similar to a reinforcement learning setup, but with a different learning algorithm (editing vs. gradient descent). This new paradigm would allow LLMs to write their own problem-solving guidelines, thus gradually transforming explicit system text into habitual weights. If successful, this could be a powerful and efficient learning method.

Recently, an intern at YC Ventures used GPT-4.1 to successfully extract website SEC filings and earnings data from all Fortune 100 companies in just two days, and was offered a return hire as a result.
The intern accomplished the task efficiently by following the steps below:
- Crawl each company's investor relations page
- Extract 10-K, 10-Q reports, earnings slides, and meeting minutes from these pages
- Synchronized daily data updates via API
This process demonstrates the enormous potential of AI technology for data processing. **Traditionally, this type of task required a team and a customized data-processing process, whereas now it can be completed by just one intern in 48 hours**. This not only improves efficiency, but also dramatically reduces costs.
The standards have changed.As natural language processing technology continues to advance, companies can access and analyze financial data more efficiently to make more accurate business decisions.
This case proves once again the prospect of the wide application of AI technology in the financial sector, providing new ideas for future ways of working.

The Awesome-Large-Multimodal-Reasoning-Models open source project on GitHub provides a complete panorama of the development of multimodal reasoning models.
Researchers from Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), after reviewing and analyzing more than 550 papers, have constructed a four-stage development roadmap from basic modules to advanced reasoning, which clearly demonstrates the complete evolution of multimodal reasoning models from perception-driven to language-centered to native reasoning. This information is summarized quite comprehensively and can well help us understand the development route of the whole AI macromodels, which is worth a look.
Main Content:
- A four-stage development of a systematic approach to multimodal reasoning models (Perception-driven, language-centered short reasoning, language-centered long reasoning, native multimodal reasoning);
- A comprehensive collection of relevant datasets and benchmarks covering the four main categories of multimodal comprehension, generation, reasoning and planning;
- Analyzing the experimental performance and capability bounds of frontier models such as OpenAI-o3 and o4-mini;
- Exploring the future development and technological prospects of native multimodal reasoning models (N-LMRMs);
- Provides an exhaustive comparison of modeling tables, including representative work at different stages and their characteristics;
- It is illustrated with visual diagrams to help us better understand the evolutionary relationships of the various models.
This project not only provides a valuable reference resource for researchers and developers, but also provides theoretical support for multimodal reasoning techniques in practical applications. Both academia and industry can benefit greatly from it.

Jim Fan said that NVIDIA successfully trained humanoid robots to walk and move like humans. This breakthrough achieved a zero-shot migration from a simulated environment to the real world.
By using a model with only 1.5 million parameters, rather than a large model with billions of parameters, NVIDIA demonstrated the ability to capture the subconscious processing of the human body. This efficient modeling allows robots to master complex motor skills in a short period of time.
here's the thing.This technology compresses a 10-year long learning process into a mere 2 hours of simulation training. This not only significantly reduces training time, but also reduces the need for computational resources.
In the future, this efficient and cost-effective method of robot training is expected to be used in a number of fields, including home services, medical care, and industrial automation.
This innovation from NVIDIA marks a new milestone in robotics.
